A note from Nancy Bachmann

I grew up in a tiny village in East Germany, behind a wall that made the world feel both distant and endlessly fascinating. When it came down, the world suddenly opened up — and I was eager to discover it.
For almost two decades, I’ve been following that curiosity around the world, traveling and publishing more than 60 travel guides, from New York to Paris, Cape Town and Hong Kong, as well as coffee-table books with more than one million copies sold in collaboration with Germany’s Süddeutsche Zeitung. More recently, I spent five years living and working in the heart of Africa — an experience that changed the way I see places, people and travel.
Over the years, I’ve learned that the places that stay with us are rarely the ones we simply see. They are the ones we feel. A landscape with a certain energy. A conversation that changes something. A meal, a ritual, a house, a person — a moment that connects us to a place and stays with us long after we’ve left.
This is what MOTHERLAND is about: looking beyond the obvious to find places with depth, soul and a story worth telling.
